• You know those things in your everyday life that just make you smile? Those objects you’re happy exist?

Yeah, Drippy Pots is one of those.

And yet, they’re more than that.

There’s a delicious contrast between the simple, structured forms and the toothsome drip of the glazes.

There are the memories they might evoke: a drip of ice cream down a cone, a dribble of icing from a homemade birthday cake, heck — a pastel outfit you had as a kid.

  • All Drippy Pots are made with glazes created in-house in our Philly studio. We glean daily inspiration from our vibrant community of makers and creators. The City of Brotherly Love, indeed.

The pots we make are a representation of how we feel at a certain moment. There’s no rhyme or reason to the colors, forms, and experiments that come out of the kiln.

We’re all about providing a dose of joy you didn’t know you needed in your pottery. Those little doses are often the most important ones.

About Brian

When Drippy Pots founder Brian Giniewski saw his middle school art teacher throw a pot for the first time, the act felt like magic. He was transfixed — and he started to create. For a kid that self-identified as being “a bit on the outside,” the ceramics studio was a safe space where he felt nurtured and supported.

Fast forward to college. There was plenty of pressure to study something practical — business — but by then, the love of ceramics had taken hold. On a college tour, he strayed from the group — and found the pottery study. The college professor who’d one day become his mentor and a close friend happened to be teaching a summer class. She helped him sign up for the foundational classes he’d need to pursue a ceramics major.

The Genesis of the Drippys

By the time he graduated from Millersville University — BFA with a concentration in ceramics in hand — he was making both functional and sculptural pieces with a healthy dose of exploration. Glaze viscosity, color, form — none of it was off the table.

He loved the utilitarian integrity of functional pottery, but all he was seeing were earth tones. That wasn’t him, and it certainly wasn’t his aesthetic. He started to play: Consistent forms, with bold, juicy, thick glazes.

The Shift to Artist — and Business Owner

At the time, Brian was in higher education, committed to being a “serious” artist and getting a coveted tenured teaching position. During his time at some best art schools around the country and beyond — Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Penn State University, Arcadia University, Syracuse University, Herron School of Art & Design, and the Chautauqua Institution — he continued to create, pushing the boundaries of functional ceramics.

On a lark, he uploaded a Drippy Pot to his Tumblr account (yes, Tumblr!) and forgot about it. When he came back to the image, he saw that it had been shared thousands of times — not just on Tumblr, but on other social media platforms as well. People started reaching out, asking if they could purchase Drippy Pots for their galleries and shops, and with that, his perspective started to shift. He could be an artist and create pots that people could enjoy in their homes. Three years later, Drippy Pots became a full-time endeavor

Accessible Art for Everyday

Six years into his full-time business, there’s been plenty of growth: fresh forms, great collaborations, countless hours of experimentation, and plenty of “happy accidents” that led to good stuff Brian would never have considered. There’s still a tangible excitement around each piece that he loads — and unloads — from the kiln. For him, the best part is the transformation: The idea that you put something in a kiln in the evening, and in the morning, it’s something completely different. He still gets giddy when he opens the kiln — there’s an optimism that outshines all other emotions.

Well, he takes that back. There’s something that he loves above all, and that’s seeing Drippy Pots in people’s homes, and understanding how his work fits into their lives and spaces. The connection to the people who collect his work — and vice versa  — is what keeps Drippy Pot going.

Are you able to do custom orders or commissions?

Sadly, no. Everything we make is released in small drops when they become available. Sometimes we’re in a phase where we’re just making vases. Sometimes it’s coffee mugs. The unpredictability and variability of certain colors or glazes mean that we don’t want to overpromise and underdeliver on custom pieces.

For those reasons, it’s better for everyone if we don’t take on custom orders and commission work.

Are there any other special care instructions I should consider?

We also see a lot of surface staining on Drippy Pots from fingerprints transferring cooking oils and other ingredients, so when possible, avoid anything oil-based that might leave a mark.

Because of the textured clay we use at the bottom, some Drippy Pots — especially mugs and cups — can take on the color of certain beverages, slightly staining the bottom in the process. We suggest gently washing the area with a bit of baking soda and water. On the textured clay, we’ve had success using OxyClean with a toothbrush to take care of any stains.

I have a press inquiry. What's my next step?
